Fiji’s Medical Tourism initiative takes a leap forward with first open-heart surgery on Vanuatu patient

Palm Casino general manager Gary Morrison and his family get all excited after being released from PSH Hospitals in Nadi, Fiji following a heart bypass surgery

Fiji’s bid to become an attractive medical tourism hub of the Pacific is slowly turning into a reality because of the presence of a state-of-the-art 130-bed specialty private hospital a stone’s throw away from the Nadi International Airport.

Getting one step closer to fulfilling the vision also deeply shared by the Fiji Government in terms of medical tourism, Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH Hospitals) has successfully carried out a complex open-heart surgery on a Vanuatu based tourism industry executive during their marathon surgery procedures that took place from Sunday February 23 to Friday February 28.

“We share a common vision with the government of the day and have started working towards achieving our goals of turning Fiji into an attractive destination for tourists who want to travel for health reasons,” PSH Hospitals founder and chief executive officer Parvish Kumar said.

“Since our multi-million-dollar cardiology department and catheterization laboratory (cath lab) was commissioned in November last year that was subsequently followed by the initial heart bypass surgery on a Lautoka grandmother, we have carried out a number of similar surgeries including a few very complex ones but the good news is that we have now had our first international heart patient from Vanuatu who has had a very successful surgery and has been discharged after given the clearance from our specialist team,” Mr Kumar informed.

He said the triple graft heart bypass surgery was led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Sanjeev Khulbey who is riding on the back of thirty-years of experience in the specialist field together with a team of highly trained cardiology specialists.

Gary Morrison, 57, who is the general manager of a leading resort based casino in Port Vila, Vanuatu has registered his name as the first international patient to receive world-class open-heart surgery in Fiji.

Mr Morrison said he has been having heart problems for the past five-years but had never undergone any heart procedures in the past apart from taking the prescribed medicines.

“My daughter in Vanuatu recommended me to a doctor there who recommended me to take a trip to Fiji for surgery plus my wife has family here in Fiji and they also strongly recommended PSH Hospitals for my surgery,” Mr Morrison said.

Mr Morrison said he will stay in Fiji for a short holiday for two-weeks and have a review before flying off to Vanuatu.

“The services I have received at PSH are brilliant, fantastic and one of the best I could expect,” Mr Morrison added.

He said since open-heart surgeries are not available in Vanuatu, he will be recommending all his family and friends to visit Fiji for treatment.

“There are no issues or delays in coming to Fiji as there are direct flights between Port Vila and Nadi operated by Fiji Airways and it is so convenient.

“When it was diagnosed that I needed to go through a surgical treatment, everything was arranged within two-weeks and now I look forward to going home,” Mr Morrison said.
