Senior medical students of Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Sciences (UPSMHS) were highly impressed and motivated to meet cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Sanjeev Khulbey during the “Know Your Heart” symposium at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH Hospitals) in Nadi on Saturday evening.

Dr Khulbey who has thirty years of experience up his sleeves in the specialist field took out time to meet the students and members of the community after a hectic schedule of performing a marathon of open-heart surgeries at PSH Hospitals during the week.

Year five medical student Shifana Dean who aspires to become a cardiologist was very inspired to meet Dr Khulbey after his presentation.

“I asked Dr Sanjeev on how he was able to perform the complex quadruple graft heart bypass surgery on a patient without the use of any blood transfusion and minimal blood loss and so was impressed with his explanation and the knowledge he shared,” Ms Dean said in reference to the Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation member who recently underwear the delicate surgery at PSH Hospitals in Nadi.

“I felt appreciative of the efforts by PSH Hospitals to educate the public on heart health but am also aware of how much more needs to be done to improve the awareness amongst the general public,” Ms Dean added.

Another student Prashantika Prasad said she understands it is difficult for people to identify and promptly deal with heart emergencies and sessions like these are a beginning to improved patient care.

“This symposium was very enlightening as it educated the general public about how to take care of your heart,” medical student Munil Nadan said.

“I would like to thank the Pacific Specialist Healthcare team for this educational event and I’m looking forward to more events like this.”

While talking to the students, Dr Khulbey highlighted that becoming a cardiologist is not an easy task and requires a lot of hard work, dedication and personal sacrifices.

He wished the students well in their studies and said he is happy to share knowledge whenever possible.

Meanwhile, PSH Hospitals and UPSMHS management are currently in talks to allow students to access the world-class medical facilities at the 130-bed specialty private hospital in future for rotational studies.
