An award-winning photojournalist has received a renewed lease of life following a successful quadruple graft heart bypass surgery at Fiji’s largest state-of-the-art 130-bed specialty private hospital in Nadi on Tuesday February 25.

50-year-old Avikash Chand of Manoca, Nausori underwent the delicate procedure at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH Hospitals) carried out by a team of highly qualified cardiothoracic surgeons and specialists.

Open-heart surgeries consisting of quadruple grafts were unheard of in Fiji previously and Mr Chand is the second patient to have undergone this complex procedure in Fiji with the first patient being a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation for whom the surgery was carried out in January without the use of a single drop of blood transfusion because of her religious beliefs.

Mr Chand was part of the marathon open-heart surgeries that took place from Sunday February 23 to Friday February 28 led by internationally renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Sanjeev Khulbey who has thirty years of experience up his sleeves in the specialist field.

Mr Chand who is the media coordinator at the Fiji Football Association (FFA) was a happy man following the successful surgery and thanked his surgical team and the management and staff of PSH Hospitals for their timely assistance.

“Within a week everything was arranged for my surgery and I wish to sincerely thank Dr Sanjeev Khulbey and PSH Hospitals owner Mr Parvish Kumar for their assistance and care without which I would not have been able to get treated so quickly,” Mr Chand said

“I have been having heart issues for quite some time now and in November I suffered a major heart attack,” he added.

Mr Chand said given the condition he faced after the November incident last year, travelling overseas for treatment was not an option anymore.

“Many of my family members and friends suggested that I should explore the possibility of travelling to India for the surgery but after reading all the good reviews about PSH Hospitals in the Fiji Times, I was deeply convinced that I can be treated far better here in Nadi and that too at a fraction of the cost and convenience for my family members as well,” Mr Chand said.

“I wish to make a suggestion to the government to enroll students into a health insurance scheme from a very young age so that they are fully covered for such procedures should something happen in later life.

“If it was not for the timely assistance and special discounts and easy payment term options offered to me by Mr Parvish Kumar, this surgery would not have been possible,” Mr Chand said.

He said people no longer need to travel overseas and spend thousands of dollars when better options are available at PSH Hospitals right here in Fiji.

“I will be telling all my family members, friends and colleagues about PSH Hospitals and the world-class medical services I have received,” Mr Chand said.

“A very special thanks goes out to everyone who has assisted me in whichever way possible to get treated on time.”

PSH Hospitals’ founder and chief executive officer Parvish Kumar says he will continue to assist patients in whichever possible and continue to invest in medical technologies and advancements to make Fiji the hub of medical services across the Pacific community.

“Apart from open-heart surgeries, our angiogram and angioplasty (stenting) services are also up and running and anyone with a little bit of symptoms should come and get checked by our in-house interventional cardiologist Dr Srikar Miryala.

“Early detection is a key to preventing invasive open-heart procedures and patients can get well with non-invasive procedures like stenting as well,” Mr Kumar said.

He said once a person reaches the age of 40, regular checkups are mandatory irrespective if they are showing any early symptoms like chest pains and sweating or not.

End…
