World-Class Open-Heart Surgery Proposed for Labasa Hospital

People in the Northern Division may soon have access to world-class open-heart surgeries at the Labasa Hospital, if all goes as planned.
Parvish Kumar, founder and chief executive officer of Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH Hospitals), has proposed the establishment of a state-of-the-art cardiology department, complete with a modern catheterization laboratory (cath lab), at Labasa Hospital, pending approval from Government.
Mr Kumar shared this proposal during a visit from the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PACP) last Friday, when the delegation toured the 130-bed PSH Hospital, the largest specialty private hospital in Fiji.
The delegation was on a fact-finding mission to observe how private hospitals operate.
Mr Kumar pointed out the importance of forming a strategic alliance with successful private hospital operators such as PSH Hospitals to enhance Fiji’s healthcare system.
“While the purpose of the visit was to observe how private hospitals operate and make recommendations to the Ministry of Health on how to better serve the public, it also us to speak openly about what we can do to assist the ministry and Government improve upon the health system,” Mr Kumar said.
He said PSH Hospitals had developed a fully home-grown solution for their cardiology department, eliminating the need for outsourcing to visiting specialists, a unique feature not found in any other medical facility in Fiji.
He proposed replicating this model at Labasa.
“Give us the same funding which you are currently spending at Labasa Hospital, and we will run it more efficiently. We’ll also set up the Cath lab and begin offering these delicate surgeries right here in Labasa,” Mr Kumar suggested.
In addition to enhancing healthcare services in the Northern Division, PSH’s presence will positively impact tourism, fostering investor and visitor confidence.
“More investors will want to set up businesses such as resorts, hotels, holiday and retirement homes, and even host international events such as sporting activities and musical concerts. They will have peace of mind knowing that world-class health services are available right in the heart of the Northern Division,” Mr Kumar added.
