A 73-year-old retired sugarcane farmer and cartage contractor underwent a delicate triple graft open-heart bypass surgery at Fiji’s state-of-the-art 100-bed private medical facility – Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospitals in Nadi on January 14.

Suresh Chand of Tomuka, Lautoka said he is so grateful to the team of cardiology specialists, the management and the support staff of PSH Hospitals for taking such good care of him before and after the procedure.

“I have had severe chest pains for a while and visited the Lautoka Hospital from where they sent me to CWM Suva for an angiogram after which I was told to arrange for an overseas treatment as according to them the surgery could not be performed locally,” Mr Chand said.

“I was very sad and disappointed at the same time thinking as to why there are no options locally.”

Mr Chand said one of his four sons, all of whom are based overseas, made a reference to the successful heart bypass surgery of a Lautoka woman last November at PSH Hospitals in Nadi after reading the article initially published by The Fiji Times last year.

“I was so happy to hear this and upon initial contact with the hospital in late December last year, everything was arranged for the operation to take place in January and here I am after my operation and recovering well,” Mr Chand said.

Mr Chand is a distant relative of the former undefeated world wrestling champion Dara Singh who also carved a big name for himself in the Indian Cinema particularly Bollywood for many decades.

“He was my grandfather-in-law and I am deeply inspired by him to face the many challenges in life, especially from his iconic performance as Hanuman in the blockbuster Ramayana series directed by the late Ramanand Sagar.

“Late Dara Singh was very humble but a true fighter and he possessed a never give up attitude and that inspires me a lot to move on in life even at this age.”

Mr Chand’s son Samil who is based in New Zealand said he and his entire family members are impressed with the level of service provided by the friendly and highly trained management and staff of PSH Hospitals.

“I wish to recommend this hospital to all my family members and friends as it saves the hassle of travelling overseas and paying large sums of money as well,” Samil said.

“The service and the turnaround time that PSH Hospitals has given us is amazing and my father is looking forward to be discharge soon.”

PSH Hospitals successfully carried out complex back-to-back open-heart surgeries on three consecutive days from January 13 to January 15 at their Nadi facility in Legalega.

Since November last year, the hospital has given renewed leases of life to many heart patients who all were discharged within five-days of their delicate procedures by a team of highly trained and experienced cardio thoracic specialists led by Dr Sanjeev Khulbey who has 30 years of experience as a cardiology surgeon.

PSH Hospitals founder and chief executive officer Parvish Kumar said there were more exciting news coming for 2025.

“The second round of open-heart surgeries for this year is scheduled to take place in mid-February and we are very proud to be providing world-class services right here in Nadi,” he said.

Mr Kumar said patients who were facing financial constraints could talk to the management as PSH Hospitals would be ready to assist all deserving patients with easy payment options.

“Saving precious lives is more important than making money and we understand not all patients are able to pay for such delicate procedures in full so there are easy payment options available,” Mr Kumar said.

“PSH Hospitals Nadi now operates 24/7 and patients are welcome to visit us any time of the day or night on any day of the week.”
